An introduction to a precedent for a new housing typology relating to the addition to a current building, also introduces a program that sustains living in a growing city center with a market, concert venue and a gym which either is not present or rarely represented within downtown Knoxville. It is a college town that is going through a housing shortage with the city being at 98% capacity.
With the severity of this issue as well as promoting growth within the downtown area, expansion on existing infrastructure presents an opportunity to add housing and provide a place to live that has a program to sustain the residents and the community.
This is ‘next house’ which is a place that answers the question of what is next in the public and private scale sitting atop the State Street Garage. The State Street Garage is the largest garage with 1700 parking spots in the downtown area that has a direct connection to Gay Street that has a pedestrian bridge coming out of the parking garage to Gay Street. Built with the idea of expansion, the infrastructure provides an opportunity for a building to ‘clip on’ and connect to the downtown area promoting expansion.
